Fraser Island has become an eco tourism venue now that its timber and sand mining industries have been stopped.  Fraser Island gained its World Heritage Listing in December 1992.

Whales
The increasing numbers of big humpback whales
that visit the bay during their yearly migration have
made this one of the very best places in the world for
whale watching. This is from late July to early November each year. Starting points for pickups are in Brisbane, and along the Sunshine Coast, and from Noosa and Rainbow Beach.

Fraser Island is a major eco-tourism destination in its own right.
Access to the island is possible by vehicular barges, aircraft, and a variety of boats. Four wheel drive vehicles are the most practical means of independent transport on the island, and these can be hired either on the mainland or on the island itself.

Fraser Island is strictly four-wheel-driving territory. Seventy-Five Mile Beach is an actual highway that runs up the surf side of the island. Four-wheel-drives share the highway with Air Fraser planes making joy flights. Sand tracks cross the island linking lakes and rainforests.

Driving conditions vary with weather and tides. Speed limits are 35kmh on inland roads and 80kmh on the Seventy-Five Mile Beach. The usual road rules are applicable. And take spare tyres, as well as a spade, water, first aid kit and a towrope,

On the beach, drive only during the low tide times. Use your indicators when passing another vehicle. Drive slowly and look out for vehicles and aircraft, pedestrians, wildlife, and beware of creek washouts on the beach.

Stay on the set tracks when you drive inland. Most tracks are narrow and two-way so keep a look out for passing bays. Give way to buses and downhill traffic.

Permits
Vehicle access permits are required for all vehicles that arrive on the island.

Camping Permits are also required in advance for camping. Permits may be obtained from Queensland National Parks and Wildlife Service offices including Brisbane, Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Bundaberg and Rainbow Beach and from River Head Barge landing and at Kingfisher Bay Resort.
