Your Guide To Travelling Australia

Barkly Homestead - Northern Territory
If you are travelling across the Queensland border from Mount Isa, this service station, caravan park and restaurant is the first stop after Camooweal and the last stop for another 180klms for fuel, water and food. Staying at Barkly Homestead is a pleasant experience and the food is very delicous, not expensive and served with a smile.

The next service station is at The Three Ways, which is at the intersection on the Stuart Highway. It is not on the intersection, so you will need to turn right by a few metres towards Darwin, fuel up, then keep driving north towards Darwin or turn South towards Alice Springs. Tennant Creek is about 28 klms away from The Three Ways and well worth a stay.

BARROW CREEK
Barrow Creek is situated 286 klms north from Alice Springs and 222 klms south of Tennant Creek. There is only a pub and the old Telegraph Station. The Telegraph Station was built in the late 1800's and was made redundant in 1980, and is now managed by the Parks and Wildlife Services for tourism. The pub and store was built in 1932 and is a great place for travellers to drop into for a cold drink and a meal. A weary caravan traveller can stay the night around the back of the pub for a very small sum of money and if it is doubled by the time you visit there, it will still be very cheap. A shower is thrown in, too.

It is worth a visit to the pub just to check out the wall displays of signed dollar notes. In the early years, ringers used to leave a $5, $10 or $20 notes on the wall with their name and date on it. Next time they visited the pub they knew they could buy a beer. After all, it may have been between pay days. Some of them have even retired their hats and work boots there. What an interesting place!

Ti-Tree has about 11 wine producing farms with all wines made from mangoes. There is a small store there where these products can be purchased. The friendly owners are happy to give you a free sample of their wines.
