MOUNT ISA
Find your holiday accommodation in Mt Isa Here. Situated 904klms from Townsville in Northern Queensland, Mount Isa has a great deal of history to tell. It began with a handful of brave men and women who explored the area and discovered copper, lead, silver and zinc. It was very hard and difficult times for these pioneers, but over about 50 years, the mines were operable and are going stronger than ever. Early investors from England and South Africa had no idea how long the mines would last and most never lived long enough to retrieve their investments and profits. Today Mount Isa, in the Western World, is the largest producer of lead and silver.

Set amidst the Selwyn Ranges and on the banks of the Leichhardt River, Mount Isa has a population of 25 000 in the city and 36 000 in the surrounding district and the locals call their town 'The Isa'. Surprisingly enough, Mount Isa is known as the world's largest city. Why? Due to the city limits extending over 41,000sq klms.

There are several spots for tourists to check out. From the underground hospital, the Hard Times Mine, School of the Air, National Trust Tent House and Rodeo Drive to the Indigenous women making papers from local grasses, trees, reeds such as buffle grass, spinifex and river gum leaves. You can find these Aboriginal women at The Mill, Arilla Paper, which is located at the Old Mining Museum in Shackleton Street, Mt Isa.

THE UNDERGROUND HOSPITAL was built over a period of 15 weeks by the locals for protection as an air raid shelter in 1942. It was never used as anything other than a shelter but the nightshift nurses slept in it through the day from 1945 to 1960 as it was dark, cool and quiet. They had the main hospital nearby and it was eventually taken over by the present day hospital in 1959. The underground hospital was renovated during 1974 - 1977 and again the locals volunteered their time often after working a 12 hour shift in the mines. It was opened for tourism in 1977.
Tourist Season - 1st April - 30th September

Camooweal

Situated 188klms from Mt Isa, 330 klms south of Burketown, and a 440 klm distance from the Stuart Highway in the Territory. Camooweal is the Gateway to the Northern Territory. It is a pleasant little town with about 300 locals. There is a hotel, butcher, small supermarket cum petrol station, Shell Roadhouse, school, police station and a few other small businesses.

There is a lot of interesting history including the historic general store, Freckleton's Heritage Store, listed with the Heritage Council. It is now a musuem and the shire hall features a display of historic photographs.

You can find the Camooweal Caves National Park just 24klms south of town on the edge of the Barkly Tablelands. There is also plenty of birdlife, bush camping and fantastic sunsets, rocky escarpments and gorges for memorable photographs.

The 13,800 hectares of semi-arid Barkly Tablelands that make up Camooweal Caves National Park have eucalypt woodland, turpentine wattle shrubland, spinifex, and large areas of Mitchell grass plains. The park provides a stopover for tired tourists to camp in a remote bush setting. A variety of birds including waterbirds and woodland species can be seen in the park at different times of the year.

The caves are sinkholes in the ground. Water has run through 500 million years of layers of soluble dolomite building caverns linked by vertical shafts up to 75 metres deep. Visitors should be extremely cautious around the edge of the sinkholes. The caves are not accessible to visitors. The local Aboriginal people have a number of dreamtime legends about this area.

It is quite pleasant to drop into the local hotel for a cold drink and a meal. This is where you can pick up other interesting tales about Camooweal.

Barkly Homestead is about 93 klms across the Queensland border, but fuel up in Camooweal, as fuel becomes more expensive as you travel across the Territory, as it is so isolated. And carry spare fuel if you can.
