Lying on the Tropic of Capricorn, Rockhampton is the largest city after Brisbane in Queensland. Founded in 1855, this relaxed, spacious, multicultural city now has a population of around 60,000. The area has two seasons, the wet and the dry, yet temperatures are on average only 1 degree celsius greater than Brisbane throughout the year, with less humidity.
Surrounded by scenic mountains, state forests and nature reserves and national parks, Rockhampton is a diverse interface with reefs, islands and beaches to the east and the historic gold town of Mt. Morgan and the Queensland outback to the west. It is the regional centre for Queensland's thriving beef industry.
Visitors to the city can revel in the historic local architecture such as the old Post Office, Customs House, Quay Street, banks and gracious homes which reveal Rockhampton's intriguing past as a bustling, prosperous port and trade centre. Many of these buildings are listed with the National Trust and Heritage Commission.
Rockhampton boasts two world class cultural facilities - the Pilbeam Theatre for the performing arts and the Walter Reid Cultural Centre with its plethora of activities which can be experienced, including circus skills, rock climbing and rail modelling as well as traditional and contemporary arts and crafts.
