The Whitsundays can be found in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, a World Heritage listed area that stretches 2300klms along Queensland's coast, from Cape York to Bundaberg. A 90minute boat ride from the islands to the stunning Bait Reef, Hook Reef, Hardy Reef and Heart Reef. The islands themselves are home to dozens of smaller parts of the reef that hug island shores or have become islands themselves. A high speed boat can travel from top to bottom, from Hayman Island to Shaw Island, in less than two hours.

There are officially 74 islands in the Whitsundays, some sprawling, mountainous with a dense covering of rainforest. Others are more modest, but just as enticing: white, sandy cays topped with wisps of scrubby vegetation.

How to Get Here!

By Air!
The Whitsundays has regular domestic flights to Proserpine Airport (Whitsunday Coast Airport) and to Hamilton Island airport. Book with either Virgin Blue and Jetstar to Proserpine and Virgin Blue, Jetstar and Qantas to Hamilton Airport. On arrival at Proserpine, you are transferred to a coach which will take you to Able Point Marina at Airlie Beach for a launch transfer to the islands. From Hamilton Island to the mainland, the Great Barrier Reef or other islands, you can board a Fantasea ferry for a quick transfer.

By Launch!
You can board a Fantasea Cruise ferry at Shute Harbour to any of the islands or a great trip out to the Great Barrier Reef as they depart randomly throughout the day. Click the above link for further information.

By Rail!
Regular Queensland rail services connect Proserpine with Australia's all major centres and capital cities. Buses meet guests to transfer to Able Point, Airlie Beach or Shute Harbour.

By Coach!
Australia's leading Coach tour companies operate multiple daily services from most major cities to the Whitsundays. There are stops in Proserpine, Cannonvale, Airlie Beach and you can hop on a local bus to take you to your destination. These usually run hourly.

By Road!
The Bruce Highway passes through the Whitsundays at Proserpine and it is a beautiful 26 klm drive to Cannonvale, then into Airlie Beach. Just follow the signs. There is a 24 hour secure parking at Shute Harbour which is only about a 15 minute drive from Airlie Beach. Shute Harbour is where you leave for the islands or Great Barrier Reef on a Fantasea Ferry.
